About the role

Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

Build software that helps athenahealth simplify clinical workflows and improve access to patient information. The Member of Technical Staff will develop and maintain backend services and cloud-based applications that support result review and integration of clinical data into patient charts. This role will collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable solutions. This position reports to the Manager, Engineering.

About the Team

The Result Review team builds capabilities that help clinicians access, review, and incorporate laboratory and imaging results into patient charts. Our work includes ChartSync workflows that bring external results into athenahealth, giving clinicians a more complete view of a patient’s care. We focus on making these workflows efficient and reliable through services and integrations that support accurate clinical data and a consistent user experience.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Develop backend applications and services using Java and Spring Boot to support clinical result workflows.
  • Build and maintain scalable microservices, RESTful APIs, and integrations with internal platforms and external data services.
  • Implement cloud-based solutions on AWS with attention to reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with engineers and product partners to translate requirements into practical technical solutions.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, identify root causes, and improve performance and stability.
  • Contribute to code reviews, automated testing, and engineering practices that improve software quality.
  • Use AI tools appropriately to support development, debugging, and testing, while carefully validating their outputs.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and estimation.
  • Document technical designs, API contracts, and service dependencies.
  • Support deployments, release validation, and production monitoring.
  • Contribute to CI/CD improvements and automation that reduces manual effort.
  • Partner with adjacent teams and share knowledge through technical discussions and walkthroughs.

Expected Education & Experience

  • 2 to 4 years of software engineering experience in backend or related application development.
  • Hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and service-based architectures.
  • Working knowledge of AWS, RESTful APIs, and relational databases.
  • Strong fundamentals in object-oriented design, testing, debugging, and version control.
  • Experience working in Agile teams and collaborating across functions.
  • Familiarity with React, TypeScript, or healthcare data standards such as FHIR is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and clear communication.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

What we can do for you

Along with health and financial benefits, athenistas enjoy perks specific to each location, including commuter support, employee assistance programs, tuition assistance, employee resource groups, and collaborative workspaces — some offices even welcome dogs.

We also encourage a better work-life balance for athenistas with our flexibility. With consistent communication and digital collaboration tools, athenahealth enables employees to find a balance that feels fulfilling and productive for each individual situation.
